Consultation

This is the time when we will try to explain the results of our examination and our plan for your treatment. We will explain and discuss various points: why and how we are going to achieve the results we desire; the alternative options related to your treatment; and the methods and material which would be used. We will also inform you of the financial involvements, arrangements and the expected treatment time. Any further questions related to your treatment will also be answered.

A typical consultation appointment will take up to 30 to 45 minutes; sometimes complicated cases may take up to an hour. To ensure that we can have ample time to answer your queries, it is sometimes best for appointments to take place in the morning when our clinic is not as crowded to prevent any interruptions. Although this may mean taking time off from work or study, you might find it worthwhile to have the time needed for this important appointment.

Preparatory appointment

This appointment occurs before we put braces in your mouth. In case of fixed appliances (railway tracks) we need to put in separators, this gives us room between some of your teeth, allowing us to insert the braces. This will only take 5 minutes. For removable appliances (plates) we need to take impressions for the laboratory, to fabricate the plates. This should only take 5 to 10 minutes.

Bonding appointment

This is the appointment where we put the braces in for you, and usually last 1 to 1 and 1/2 hours allowing us to do everything properly. This appointment involves cleaning of your teeth before bonding, preparing your teeth for the brackets, and cementing on the brackets with glue. Then the wires will be put on as well. Afterwards, you will give you instructions on how to take care of your braces and oral hygiene instructions; this will let you know the proper way to clean your mouth now that you have an appliance in your mouth. Your nurse will also instruct you on the kind of food to avoid during this period. We strongly recommend that you take a leave of absence from your school or work.

Debond

This is when the appliance is removed, and will last 45 minutes. We will do some cleaning, and take an impression for the laboratory to make retainers to stabilize the movement of your teeth. Once again you may be required to come outside of our rush hour to make sure things are done properly, and that the impressions are sent out before the end of day.

Retainer Delivery

We will aim to have your retainer(s) back from the lab within a week, to ensure that there is no unwanted movement. In this appointment we will also tell you how to take care of your retainer(s) and the things to watch out for.
